PROUD to be a member of these WONDERFUL organizations:

BLACK HILLS, BADLANDS & LAKES ASSOCIATION - Proud to represent the B&B industry of South Dakota as a Trade Representative on the Board of Directors

BED & BREAKFAST INNKEEPERS OF SOUTH DAKOTA (inspection required) - In addition to being the Newsletter Editor, also sit on the Board of Directors as one of the four Regional Representatives where I represent the region covering the Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes area.

SOUTH DAKOTA RETAILERS ASSOCIATION - This association represents the interests of retail businesses throughout South Dakota.

WEST RIVER SPAY NEUTER COALITION - Although this doesn't have a thing to do with tourism, as the Vice President on the Board of Directors, I work with cat rescue people, the Humane Society, veterinarians, cat colony guardians and low income individuals in an attempt to spay/neuter as many felines (personal pets, barn cats, feral/wild cats) as possible for as little as possible. www.spayneutercoalition.com   In 2011, our coalition received a generous grant from the ASPCA specifically to help people with barn cats and those willing to trap feral cats and we've been getting them altered for $5-$10! We also got a grant from the Alley Cat Alliance which allowed us to do 25 feral cats.  I am very passionate about my volunteer work.  Check out our website, we are the ONLY organization west of the river in South Dakota that does this, our work is really cut out for us.  We are all volunteers, there are no funds for employees, cell phones, gas, supplies, etc.  I am truly honored to be a member of this important organization.

About Us

I'm Shari and I met Lee 12/24/94 in California.  I was working for the government in a nonchallenging, mid-management position and he was a merchant marine going to ports all over the world.  When we began traveling together, he introduced me to bed and breakfasts.  We enjoyed them so much that I told him that when he retired, we should run our own B&B.  He thought it was such a great idea and told his family who lives here in Rapid City.

One day his aunt called to let us know that Sweetgrass was up to sale.  That weekend we decided to think about it while camping in the mountains.  On the way up, we bought a book called "Idiots Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast" (or something similar).  Since we read the book cover to cover and had been to many B&Bs, we decided we were "experts".  That Sunday night, he flew out and on Wednesday, we bought Sweetgrass.

I've lived in 12 states, came here sight unseen and have not regretted a single moment.  We've had the most interesting and fun guests. We've enjoyed spending time listening and talking with them.  I have had guests from Canada, Japan, China, Columbia, Germany, France, Belguim, England, Russia - - how fun is that!

On top of all that, Lee's family here is the greatest, really wonderful people.  We've also met such nice, down to earth people here and have made many great friends.  I'm now working on getting my mother to move out here since I know I won't ever leave this area.
